Flight Student Assistant
The Client
This was a startup run by a recreational pilot who saw a need in the market. It has not been developed yet so wireframes will not be shown.
Challenge
The help decrease the flight student dropout rate which is around 80%.
Solution
Create a clear place for a new flight student to start their inquiry process about training and have a tool with them throughout all their training.
Part 1 will be the website to help them gather all the information for places to train and what is needed.
Part 2 will be the mobile app that they would use while in training to help support them and keep them on track.
Role
UX Designer performing all of the below tasks.
My Process
Step One: Research
The client had done a bit of research around the topic when we met but his feature set was had over 40 features in it and he was not sure where to start to create an MVP.
Card Sort
We did a card sort of all the different features to see what was must have’s and nice to have’s as well as if they were more for the web app or the mobile app.
Competitive/ Comparative Analysis
I started my research diving into the world of flight training and what there was to offer in the world.
My core findings were that there wasn’t any one clear path or place to start and that the process can get very confusing.
While looking up possible competition I found that sites talked about having a place to start but still didn’t show the user a clear path.
There were also products that had some of our features but did not offer any one set of features to help guide them through the process.
I also researched a few of the features we wanted to add like having a log book. (see below)
Survey
After I was getting an idea of the world of flight training I thought it was time to hear from the users on where there pain points were.
I created a hefty survey that would help us hear from:
- People looking into flight training
- Current Students
- Students that had stopped training
- Pilots
The survey was posted on a few different forums that related to flight training as well as social media accounts.
The response was overwhelming!! Within 24 hours we had almost 200 responses. I stopped taking responses at day 3 with almost 300 submitted surveys.
The data was so rich with information that I ended up writing an article about it to share with other people that might be interested in hearing what people had to say.

Here are the responses from the students looking into training:
User Interviews
We spent a day and talked to a couple different flight schools to see what they needed to help them support their students.
We learned about the process of signing up for classes, what’s required and how the rules will be changing in the up coming months.
Step Two: Strategy
After the bulk of the research was completed it was time to start strategizing out the game plan for the product.
Business Strategy
I worked with the client on their Brand Identity Prism as well as suggestions for revenue avenues.
User Flow
While we had chatted about business strategies I mostly focused on the user flow starting with the website.
Step Three: Design
At this point the product is not live yet so I am unable to share any of the designs. If you would like to know more about this project please email me : murphyk99@gmail.com
